French win ITER Fusion reactor site

After a rather long and nasty battle, a site has finally been chosen to host the ITER Fusion reactor.

(Audio Podcast Available)

ITER is an international consortium consisting of the EU, US, China, Russia, France, the UK, and Japan. France and Japan had been the last two countries battling for the prestige, and jobs, that hosting the ITER reactor would create. In the end, France… with the support of China, Russia and the EU won… but it’s tough to say that Japan “lost” considering some of the concessions they received in return.

The important thing here is that this project can get underway.

Fusion is the opposite of Nuclear Fission the science behind Nuclear bombs. Instead of splitting atoms apart… Fusion fuses (hydrogen, in this case) atoms together. This is the basic process that powers our own sun, so you will often here people call this project the “Sun on Earth”.

It may sound counter-intuitive, and I admit I do not understand the physics of it completely myself, but when you fuse two atoms together, massive amounts of energy, and thus electricity, can be generated. As we see with the sun. However, just like the sun… it takes massive amounts of heat and pressure just to get the Fusion engine started, and that’s where the big challenge rests. Once that engine is started.. it is thought that the energy created will sustain the reaction indifinitely as long as there is fuel (deuterium and tritium.. isotopes of Hydrogen), to burn.

Fusion has always been the thing of science fiction… the fusion proposed for ITER is “hot fusion”… that is the exact process the sun uses. They will attempt to create a device that will heat deuterium and tritium to 100 million degrees Celsius. The resulting reaction will produce 500MW of power from the reactor.. which is comparable to a standard Natural Gas fired plant built today. The first tests are slated to start as early as 2015.

The holy grail of “Fusion” power is “cold” fusion.. that is, fusion that can be initiated at close-to-room temperature. In just the past few months we have seen a number of interesting developing including this one where scientists claim to have created “pocket fusion”. If it’s the real thing, then no doubt we’ll hear more about it in coming years… otherwise, this will be just another example of overly optimistic scientists.

Fusion really could be the answer to all our energy problems… but at least for now, it is still mainly in the realm of science fiction. Hopefully ITER will now be able to move past the politicking and start producing real science that will move us closer to harnessing the power of the Sun.

2005 Pew Global Survey on US Image… not all bad.

The results, of the latest Pew survey are in and I think they speak for themselves. Please check out the link. It’s just one page, and all the pertinent results are in easy to read tables.

(Audio Podcast Available)

I’d like to hear what others have to say about this survey… especially when taking to account the change in attitudes from 2000 until the present.

As far as Canada is concerned… our positive view of Americans is obviously lower than in 2000, but compared to other western nations… we are steady in our support of our Southern friends. Even more so than the UK.

Perhaps the most interesting question posed is on the different “views on Americans”. Of course, Americans give themselves high marks… who wouldn’t give themselves high marks? Except for one category. Greed. 70% of Americans think themselves as greedy… more than anyone else.

The response by Canadians on that topic are particularly interesting because of our unique exposure to unaltered American media. I believe this exposure directly affected Canadians answers to questions on Americans Honesty (42% - lowest western nation), Violence (64% - highest), and Rudeness (53% - highest).

Personally, while I have come across many dumb American tourists asking REALLY dumb questions (like “Where’s the bridge that I took to get on this Island”… uh.. there is no bridge) I think people just become dumb when they’re tourists, including myself, and I don’t have a problem with that. That said… I have never encountered an unfriendly American tourist. EVER. Nor have I ever encountered an unfriendly American in my travels in America. So I’d be interested to know why the “rudeness” score was so high. I wonder if it was simply a backlash aimed at Bush… I’m 90% positive that would be the reasoning behind the Honesty answer as well.

These surveys are always very interesting and provocative. I look forward to hearing your reaction.

Irans President Announced

The blog “Iran Votes 2005″ says it all.

(Audio Podcast Available)

Mission accomplished: Hezbollah has won with the help of the hidden hand of Allah!

As anticipated Ahmadinejad is now officially announced as the Islamic Republic’s new president. Mission accomplished! Congratulations to those who voted for him! They must be delighted that their favourite cadidate was their Leader’s favourite too. Ahmadinejad is the first appointed president of the Islamic Republic. And perhaps the last one? Who knows?!

Check out the Election not-so-Comic here.

Regime Change Iran reports on other reports first from a Farsi language site:

The site Peiknet received on June 18 an anonymous letter from a 27-year-old Basiji who declared that he voted 11 times, with 8 fake Identity cards, because the supreme Leader wanted him to do so. It is an order of war, it changes the field of battle, the leader says. It is called Operation Nasr, he said in the letter, “islam is in danger and it is necessary to save it by any means” ! Let us forget it, I can do nothing …

And finally,

[Ahmadinejad is] the ultimate Islamofascist

Neither Rafsanjani nor Ahmadinejad has any intention of altering the basic structure of the Islamic Republic

This is not a fight over the future of the country; it’s a power struggle within the tyrannical elite.

There have been no reports of any protests. It seems Iranians have, for now, chosen to lay low. No doubt they know best and have chosen wisely for the time being.

Iranians vote amid planning of “Legal Coup”?

Iranians are, just now, finishing voting in the 2nd round of the 2005 Iranian Presidential Elections.

(Audio Podcast Available)

The Election has already been troubled by accusations of misreported turnout numbers, violent protests in overseas voting places, and an unprecedented run-off caused by two candidates doing surprisingly well. Rafsanjani and Ahmadinejad have taken the role of Reformist and Hard-Liner respectively, even though Rafsanjani has a controversial and conservative past.

However, the really riveting and potentially explosive news is coming out of the Iran Votes 2005 weblog.

Windsteed reports:

In the midnight of Saturday (June, 28) an order was received by the Ministry of Interior from the Office of the Supreme leader, which requested that the result of the election be released as (1-Rafsanjani, 2-Ahmadinejad).

….

The first official results announced by the Ministry of Interior placed Karoubi [A Reformist] on top, ahead of Rafsanjani and Ghalibaf.

As the discrepancy emerged, the same person called the Ministry again, this time using a threatening language, to deliever the message that if the Minister would not give in to the order, dangerous consequences would face Iranian nation, and the families of the Minister and even the President [Khatami].

A ‘legal coup’ is underway.

Rafsanjani is well aware of this course of events and is trying to prevent the coup to happen. But he is also aware that he himself is not safe.

We can only hope for the best. More as news of the results, and reaction, appears.
